About PRP

Platelet-rich plasma is an innovative regenerative treatment that utilizes the platelets found in your own blood to revitalize the health and appearance of your skin. We take a sample of your blood and process it to separate the plasma from the other components, then apply this serum to the face. PRP contains more than 20 different types of growth factors, as well as small proteins called cytokines. (1) These growth factors and proteins aid in tissue repair, wound healing, and inflammation reduction, as well as encourage new cell growth. At Scottsdale Plastics, our PRP treatment is paired with microneedling to provide comprehensive rejuvenation.

About Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses your body’s natural regenerative properties to enhance the health and appearance of the skin. Also known as collagen-induction therapy, this treatment uses a device with needles to create micropunctures in the skin. (2) In response, the body enhances the production of collagen and elastin, two key proteins for maintaining a youthful-looking skin appearance and elasticity.

Benefits

PRP microneedling offers several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Collagen Production: The growth factors found in PRP help nourish the skin and promote the production of collagen, a vital protein for maintaining elastic and youthful-looking skin.
  • Improved Skin Texture: Microneedling with PRP can effectively diminish rough patches and enlarged pores, resulting in smoother, glassier skin.
  • Reduced Signs of Aging: This treatment can soften and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Minimally Invasive: Treatment does not require an extensive recovery time or incisions, allowing you to return to your normal routine faster than other treatments.
  • Natural Treatment Methods: Using your own platelets not only minimizes the risk of reaction or complications but also avoids using any artificial substances.
  • Boosted Confidence: Improvements in your aesthetic appearance can instill a greater sense of self-esteem and body confidence.

Candidates

Suitable candidates for our PRP and microneedling treatment include anyone interested in enhancing the health and appearance of their skin. Those experiencing early signs of aging, such as wrinkles or fine lines, or who have noticed their skin is unevenly textured or toned, may also make suitable candidates for our PRP and microneedling treatment.

All candidates interested in PRP should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations about their results. Dr. Bonillas will determine each individual’s eligibility for PRP therapy during their personal consultation.

Preparation

Dr. Bonillas or another member of his team will provide you with a set of instructions to help guide your treatment preparation. These instructions are straightforward but are essential for facilitating the best possible results.

You may be advised to discontinue taking medications or supplements that have blood-thinning properties. You may need to temporarily modify your skin care routine to avoid using heavier or more acidic skincare products that may compromise your skin’s natural barrier. Nicotine use should also be fully ceased several weeks in advance, as this can affect your recovery. You should also make sure you arrive at your appointment with a clean face, free from any skincare or makeup products.

Procedure

When you arrive, you will be led to a private treatment room. Your skin will be cleansed and sanitized, and a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area to help ensure you are comfortable throughout your treatment.

A small sample of blood will be taken from the upper arm. This sample of blood is processed through a centrifuge to separate blood particles and isolate the platelet-rich plasma. While the blood is being processed, Dr. Bonillas will pass a device over the skin to induce collagen stimulation. The device will be fashioned with rows of fine needles. As the device passes over the skin, the needles will penetrate the surface and create microscopic punctures. Dr. Bonillas will pass the device over the face until all punctures are evenly distributed and at a uniform depth.

Once achieved, the processed PRP serum will then be applied to the treated area. This serum’s platelet levels are three to seven times more concentrated than those of normal blood, (3) which significantly boosts the body’s regenerative abilities. The solution will then be absorbed into the created microchannels.

Recovery

You will be able to return to your daily routine after your appointment, as there is no downtime associated with microneedling; however, there may be certain restrictions you need to follow as your skin recovers. You may experience redness or tenderness in the treated areas, but these effects typically subside on their own within several days. You will need to avoid direct or excessive sun exposure and wear the appropriate sun protection when leaving the house. You will also need to continue avoiding the use of harsh or heavy skincare products as you recover. Dr. Bonillas will provide you with a set of more detailed recovery instructions after your treatment to optimize your results.

Results

The results of your treatment will continuously improve as the collagen levels in your skin increase. You will be able to notice a reduction in superficial concerns, including pigmentation irregularities, acne scars, wrinkles, creases, and more, as the texture and tone of your skin improve. You may also experience an improvement in the overall elasticity and health of your skin.

It may take several months for the final results to manifest, with many individuals seeing the best results after undergoing several treatment sessions. However, you can enjoy lasting improvements to your skin’s vitality and appearance after just a single treatment session!
