About Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are one of the most popular minimally invasive treatments for aging today. Both men and women use these treatments to reduce moderate to severe lines on the face. Neurotoxins, like BOTOX, are tried and tested solutions to aging signs. When administered correctly, these treatments turn the clock back on your appearance.

Wrinkles develop from repetitive movements, such as frowning or bunching your eyebrows when you’re worried or upset.

After repeated frowning, fine lines develop, which in turn result into permanent wrinkles, even when your face is resting. Patients often seek treatments because these wrinkles cause their face to always look worried, angry or tired. Neurotoxins are a quick and effective way to reduce the wrinkles associated with facial expressions. In addition, they are often recommended by Dr. Bonillas as a preventative treatment for facial wrinkles when treatment is begun before the wrinkles form.

Neurotoxins are injected with a tiny needle into the muscles that are causing the wrinkle. It relaxes the muscles by disrupting the communication with its nerves, thereby releasing tension in the skin and helping smooth creases and lines. With this temporary pause in the communication between the nerves and muscles of the treated areas, patients enjoy smoother and younger-appearing skin.

Injections are performed by Dr. Bonillas with his in-depth knowledge of the facial anatomy and muscle layout, as well as extensive experience injecting over the years.

What is BOTOX?

The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name BOTOX, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet near the eyes and other lines of the face and neck. The neurotoxin blocks the nerve communication, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

BOTOX is FDA-approved in adults for the treatment of frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. All other uses on the face and neck are considered “off-label,” and you should consult an experienced injector such as Dr. Bonillas when considering these areas.

BOTOX is also used to help excessive sweating of the hands and armpit areas, also known as hyperhidrosis. BOTOX is also helpful with headaches and migraines, neck spasms, and masseter muscle enlargement, or hypertrophy.

In addition to BOTOX, Dr. Bonillas offers three more popular neurotoxin injectables: Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin.

What is Jeuveau?

Also FDA-approved, Jeuveau is a treatment designed to diminish the appearance of glabellar lines (lines between the eyebrows) in adults. Jeuveau is manufactured by the company Evolus and works similar to BOTOX, but is a completely different molecule and behaves differently in terms of the duration of onset and longevity.

Jeuveau will reduce moderate to severe frown lines and help rejuvenate your appearance.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is also FDA-approved for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles in the glabellar region (lines between the eyebrows) in adults. Like the other neurotoxins, Dysport is a completely different molecule and behaves differently in terms of the duration of onset and longevity.

Dysport will alleviate lines and help you look more rejuvenated.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin® is another FDA-approved product for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabella complex) in adults. Like the other neurotoxins, Xeomin is a completely different molecule and behaves differently in terms of the duration of onset and longevity.

Xeomin has been shown to reduce glabella lines and help you look more refreshed.

Benefits

We offer a wide selection of neurotoxins to provide our patients with many different options.

These four neurotoxins, BOTOX, Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin are designed to reduce lines and wrinkles on the face, as well as treat excessive sweating of the hands and armpit areas, headaches and migraines, neck spasms, and masseter muscle enlargement. Everyone has a unique chemical makeup and while one patient may find Botox provides long lasting results, another patient will find Dysport produces their best outcome. The best way to determine which treatment is right for you is to schedule a consultation with us today!

Candidates

While these procedures are designed to reverse the signs of aging, there is no specific age at which someone may benefit from neurotoxins. As everyone ages according to their genetic makeup, wrinkles and other signs of aging may appear in early adulthood, like in the early 20s. Therefore, we treat patients of all ages. In fact, Dr. Bonillas recommends starting neurotoxin treatments early before the signs of aging are irreversible. BOTOX, Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin are designed to help prevent and reduce the signs of aging, and help you look and feel your best no matter what your age is.

Personal Consultation

During your consultation, you will be provided with information regarding all the neurotoxins, and which may be best suitable for you. All of the treatments are similar in how they are administered, and each has minimal to no preparation and downtime.

A personal consultation is a great time to ask questions! Your consultation is just for you and we take the time to address your concerns and answer your questions. Some patients find it helpful to write down their questions and bring them to their consultation.

During your consultation, we want to learn about you! Each patient has different concerns and expectations, and their treatment will be tailored to fit their needs. Neurotoxin treatments are customizable. One patient may want a very conservative treatment, whereas another may want a full treatment.  Dr. Bonillas will discuss the best treatment with you during your consultation.

Preparation

Neurotoxin injections require minimal preparation. Personalized instructions will be provided for you at your consultation. Abstaining from blood thinners such as, but not limited to, aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Excedrin, fish oils, omegas, and vitamin E can reduce swelling and bruising during and after your treatment.

Procedure

Dr. Bonillas will determine the correct treatment in order to provide you with the maximum effect. Once this is determined, he will inject the neurotoxin underneath the skin using a tiny needle with minimal to no discomfort. Each area is injected until the treatment is completed. Treatment sessions typically range from 5-10 minutes depending on the number of areas needing treatment.

Recovery

Following your treatment, you may return to your daily routine with little to no downtime. You may experience little to no discomfort. You will need to abstain from strenuous activities for 24 hours after your treatment, then afterwards there are no restrictions.

Results

Results will start to set in within two to four days, and full effects are seen by two weeks. The effects last about three months on average, however, the longevity of results will depend on your body’s chemistry and its response to the chosen neurotoxin.

Dr. Bonillas sees his new neurotoxin patients two weeks after their treatments to assess the treatment outcome and make any recommendations for future treatments. Occasionally he will recommend a touch up treatment during this visit if desired results are suboptimal.

Complementary Procedures

Dermal fillers are a great addition to a BOTOX, Jeuveau, Dysport or Xeomin treatment! At Scottsdale Plastics we offer various soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm and Bellafill, to further reduce the signs of aging, and enhance the overall neurotoxin treatment.

Juvederm

This hyaluronic acid-based soft tissue filler restores volume to the face where it has been lost with aging. Juvederm consists of a smooth gel that is injected into the skin. Results may last for up to twelve months and correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles.

Bellafill

This soft tissue filler is a semi-permanent filler with longevity up to 5 years.  Bellafill works by stimulating the body to produce its own collagen to fill in within the areas of injection. This phenomenon is known as biostimulation. It helps restore that youthful volume, thereby making you appear younger and healthier!

Injectable treatments are simple and effective. BOTOX, Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin work to relax lines and wrinkles on the face, while fillers will fill and restore the volume lost with aging. The result from a treatment with both a neurotoxin and a soft tissue filler will be a younger and more rejuvenated you

Cost

The cost of your treatment will depend on the desired outcome and whether you combine treatments. The cost breakdown will be discussed during your personal consultation. FAQ

What is BOTOX used for?

BOTOX is FDA-approved for the treatment of lines along the forehead, between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet. The treatment can also be used to reduce hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the hands and armpits, migraines, masseter hypertrophy and muscle spasms.

How long does BOTOX last?

BOTOX lasts about 3 months on average, after which you will see your wrinkles gradually return. The wrinkles and lines will be no worse than they were before and a simple maintenance treatment can help you keep your results consistent.

What is the difference between BOTOX and Dysport?

There are a few differences between BOTOX and Dysport, but both are neurotoxins used to treat similar conditions. Primarily, Dysport has been shown to have a faster onset of action, within two days, while BOTOX has an onset of action of about four to five days. On the other hand, BOTOX results often last a bit longer than Dysport results. Dysport is a smaller sized molecule, therefore it tends to migrate further than BOTOX, which is beneficial for the treatment of off-label areas such as forehead and crow’s feet. Dysport is approved for frown lines, whereas BOTOX is FDA-approved for a number of treatment areas.

How long does Dysport take to wear off?

Dysport often takes about two to three months to wear off, but longevity is different in each individual.

Is Jeuveau better than BOTOX?

The best treatment for you will really depend on you and your body’s chemical makeup. Some patients find BOTOX is more effective and longer-lasting, whereas others find Jeuveau works best for them. A personal consultation will help determine which neurotoxin is best for you!
