Breast augmentation is a popular surgical procedure that enhances breast size and shape. It’s also one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the US, and one of our most popular services. If you’ve always wanted just a little something extra, a breast augmentation might be just the thing.
Breast augmentation helps women accentuate their assets. This procedure can transform small or unevenly sized breasts into a full, firm, proportional look. For women who have been disappointed with the changes in their breasts after pregnancy or surgery, or who want to address a congenital breast defect, breast augmentation can be an exciting way to finally take control of their curves.
If you’ve been thinking about giving your girls a little lift, Dr. Robert G. Bonillas is here to help. Unlike many plastic surgeons offering wild varieties of procedures and implants, Dr. Bonillas performs tried and true traditional breast implants, and he has this art perfected.
Come visit our office in Scottsdale to meet the team, Dr. Bonillas, and get started on the new you. Call us at (480) 245-6380, or fill out our convenient online form to schedule your consultation.

Here in Arizona, it’s always swimsuit season, whether you’re poolside, on the lake or river, or warming up apres-ski in a jacuzzi. Patients that come to Scottsdale Plastics choose to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic reasons. But whatever their reasons, they end up with stunning, natural-looking results. After all, there’s no one like you. The intricacies of breast augmentation surgery are tailored to each patient’s body and ultimate goals. Modern breast implants mean that you have options, and it’s your prerogative to choose wisely!
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 300,000 breast implants were performed in 2019 alone. That’s a lot of ladies. And ladies, you have a lot of options when it comes to your perfect new set of breasts.
The first modern silicone implants were introduced in the 1960’s, but they’ve certainly come a long way since then. (2) Today’s silicone breast implants are safer, feel more natural, and come in more shapes, and sizes than ever before. Whether you want a big, round, high-impact bust, or a subtle and sexy natural look with just a little extra oomph, there’s an implant (or two) for you.
Silicone implants offer a realistic feel and ideal shape.
Saline implants offer women adjustable fullness without some of the risks that silicone implants pose. Because these implants are soft bags full of sterile saline solution, there are no toxic side effects in case of rupture, which cannot be said of their silicone counterparts. However, the feel of saline implants can differ from the more life-like consistency of silicone breast implants.
Women choose breast implants for a variety of reasons, but before they enter our offices, Dr. Bonillas and his team make sure that women know everything about what goes into their body.
It’s important to know that breast implants do not last a lifetime. There are health risks and complications that come along with this procedure, and in 10 or so years, another procedure will be necessary to remove or replace the implants. Of course, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing- the kind of breasts you’d want in your 30’s aren’t necessarily the kind of breasts you’d want in your 60’s. But maybe they are! Either way, you’ll have the opportunity to re-assess and refresh when the time comes to upgrade your bosom.
The body naturally reacts to the implant by forming a layer of scar tissue around it. If this overdevelops, it can eventually contract around the implant, which can be painful, and dangerous. The FDA has also identified an association between breast implants and the development of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that develops in the fluid or scar tissue surrounding breast implants. (2)
As the implant ages, there is an increased chance that the implants will leak or rupture. When saline implants rupture, the body naturally absorbs the sterile saline solution, leaving the woman with an asymmetrical chest that is immediately visible. However, when a silicone implant ruptures, it can go undetected. Unlike saline, silicone is not natural or safely absorbed by the body.
Women with breast implants are instructed to get MRI scans every two years to monitor the condition of their implants. Depending on the implants, mammograms are not always a viable option to monitor the health of the breasts. Women with a genetic risk of breast cancer should consider breast implants carefully.
Today’s implants are FDA-approved and safer than ever. Women who have experienced weight fluctuations, or changes in their breasts due to pregnancy, or breastfeeding are excellent candidates for the benefits of breast augmentation.
If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, breast augmentation will deliver gorgeous, transformative results.

The process of inserting your new breast implants is as personal as choosing them. Depending on the size and type of your implant, and your body, your surgery will be customized to you. Breast implants can be placed either underneath the pectoral muscle or more superficially under a sufficient covering of breast tissue and skin. How these areas are accessed also depends on the type of incision required to place the implant safely and incur minimal scarring.
During your breast augmentation procedure, you’ll be sedated, anesthetized, and resting comfortably.
Plan on total rest for the first couple days after your procedure, and limited activity for the next week or two. Normal activity is frequently resumed within 4-6 weeks, and full recovery from a breast implant surgery usually takes 6-8 weeks.
Although you will notice an immediate increase in the size of your breasts, your breasts will feel firm and heavy following your breast augmentation. Post-procedure bruising, swelling, and firmness will gradually subside.
Final results are usually not visible from 3-6 months after surgery, when the breast implant finally settles into place and expands to its full size. Recovery times will vary on an individual basis. If you have questions at any time during your recovery, please do not hesitate to ask.
Our team will look forward to seeing you at your follow-up appointments, and celebrating your results!
You will see the results of your breast augmentation emerge as your post-procedure conditions fade away.
