A breast implant is a medical device that can enhance the shape, size, and natural contours of the breasts. Breast augmentation is one of the most widely performed procedures in the country (1), and patients have a vast array of different implant options to choose from, varying in composition, shape, filling, volume, and more.
Dr. Robert Bonillas of Scottsdale Plastics specializes in helping patients achieve greater symmetry, improved volume, and enhanced proportions that align with their body and self-image through breast augmentation. Breast augmentation increases breast size, enhances symmetry, and restores volume. Patients not only experience aesthetic improvements but also a newfound confidence and a boost in their self-esteem after surgery. (1) This transformative procedure has a high success rate, low complication rate, and high patient satisfaction rate at a 91% median, (2) but Dr. Bonillas generally sees even higher satisfaction rates.
There are many different types of breast implants. Selecting your ideal pair depends on your body anatomy, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.
Silicone implants contain a viscous silicone gel within a silicone outer shell. (3) They are ideal for patients who are seeking a smooth, natural feel and realistic movement. Silicone implants also maintain their shape over time, which contributes to long-lasting enhancements.
Saline implants contain a sterile saltwater solution inside a silicone shell. These implants are popular for their safety profile and lower cost. Because Dr. Bonillas can fill saline implants after placement, he can use smaller incisions, leading to less scarring and more accurate volume adjustment. If saline implants ever rupture, your body will safely absorb the solution. This also creates a visible change in volume, so you might be able to detect a rupture more quickly.
Motiva SmoothSilk Round implants are silicone implants that have a natural, soft feel and a high safety profile. These implants effectively provide beautiful symmetry and fullness in the upper and lower poles of the breast. They also have a lower complication rate. Motiva SmoothSilk implants allow for easier recovery and reduce the risk of animation deformity.
Motiva SmoothSilk Ergonomix implants are silicone implants that move naturally with your body. They maintain a round shape when lying down and form a natural-looking silhouette when standing. Motiva SmoothSilk Ergonomix breasts use a “gummy gel,” or ProgressiveGel Ultima, which mimics how real breast tissue feels, looks, and moves.
Transaxillary breast augmentation is an advanced technique that creates the incision in the natural crease of the armpit. Dr. Bonillas uses this surgical technique to eliminate scarring on the breasts, preserve nipple sensation, and reduce the risk of complications. Transaxillary breast augmentation might make the early stages of recovery easier—the approach can also reduce the need for drains, minimize implant displacement, and create a well-defined and symmetrical inframammary crease. (4) When placing breast implants, Dr. Bonillas can position them under the pectoral muscle for a natural look or above the muscle for a quicker recovery; however, both techniques leave the breast completely free of scars.
Breast augmentation offers many benefits that extend beyond physical enhancement. Many patients find that this procedure helps restore confidence and renew a sense of femininity through:
If you naturally have smaller breasts and want to enhance their size, have asymmetrical breasts (such as one bigger than the other), or want to restore volume loss after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss, you may be an ideal candidate for this procedure. You must also be in relatively good health, be at a stable weight, be a non-smoker or willing to quit, and have fully developed breasts; typically, this occurs around 18 to 22 years old. You must also hold realistic expectations for your procedure.
During your personal consultation, Dr. Bonillas will evaluate your medical history, examine your breast size, and discuss your procedure goals. With this information, he will help you explore the different types of implants and help you select a pair that aligns with your breast anatomy, preferences, and appearance goals. During this meeting, Dr. Bonillas will address any questions or concerns you may have so you feel confident in your augmentation. During your implant procedure, Dr. Bonillas will make an incision in the armpit and form a channel leading to the breasts using an endoscope. Dr. Bonillas will create a pocket for the implant over the muscle or behind the breast tissue. If placing silicone implants, Dr. Bonillas will insert each implant into the breast symmetrically and centrally. For saline implants, he will place the empty implant into the pocket and connect a temporary tube to the implant’s valve. He will then fill the implant with the saline solution to the desired volume and size.
He will bandage the breasts and give you a supportive surgical bra. This procedure takes about one to two hours, and patients receive either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
After your procedure, you can expect mild swelling and soreness. Resting is crucial during the first week. Dr. Bonillas advises you to take at least 3–7 days off work and walk frequently (but gently) to prevent blood clots. You must also avoid heavy lifting, wear your surgical bra 24/7, sleep on your back, and take prescribed medications to reduce discomfort and swelling and prevent infection.
After 3–6 weeks, you may return to light exercise with Dr. Bonillas’s approval, but you should continue to avoid soaking in baths or pools. Cleaning the incisions and applying ointments as directed will help minimize potential scarring and encourage faster healing.
After six weeks, it may look like your implants are still “high and tight,” but they will begin to soften after a couple of months.
Over time, any scars will fade, and you can resume all regular activities and heavy exercise with Dr. Bonillas’s go-ahead.
The recovery from breast augmentation is a gradual process that requires patience and gentle care, but after a couple of months, you will see the results that align with what you set out to achieve.
Dr. Bonillas’s advanced techniques and understanding of breast anatomy allow him to create results that look and feel natural while upholding high standards of patient safety and comfort throughout the process.
The cost of your breast implants depends on the implant type, surgical approach, and whether or not you pair this surgery with other procedures. During your personal consultation, Dr. Bonillas will provide a detailed cost estimate for your procedure. Scottsdale Plastics also offers financing options for qualifying patients.

While breast implants are long-lasting, they are not permanent. On average, breast implants last 10 to 20 years or possibly more before revision or replacement may be necessary. Modern advancements in implant design have given patients and surgeons implants that last much longer than older models.
Dr. Bonillas offers traditional silicone, saline, Motiva SmoothSilk Round, and Motiva SmoothSilk Ergonomix breast implants. Although there is a wide range of implant options and brands, these are generally among the most popular kinds and continuously deliver natural-looking results that patients enjoy.
The cost of your breast implants depends on the implant type, surgical approach, and whether or not you include any other procedures. Dr. Bonillas will outline the cost of your procedure at your personal consultation.
Dr. Bonillas uses a transaxillary approach, which minimizes scarring. There will not be any visible scarring on the breast itself since the incision is in the armpit. Scarring fades significantly over time.
Breast augmentation improves symmetry and proportion, creates a youthful breast appearance, improves body satisfaction, increases breast size and profile, and more!
