Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure intended to remove excess tissue from the labia minora and/or labia majora (the inner and/or outer lips of the vagina). The procedure resizes or reshapes the labia. Labial hypertrophy, or enlarged/elongated labia, can be caused by genetics, puberty, and/or childbirth. Women undergo labiaplasty for a number of different reasons. Women decide on a labiaplasty for function and aesthetics. Some choose labiaplasty to address asymmetry, uncomfortable pulling and tugging, and self-consciousness. For those women looking for a neater, more symmetrical, and even younger appearance for their external genitalia, labiaplasty can help resolve their discomfort.
While vaginal rejuvenation can be a very sensitive topic, there are many benefits women may experience after labiaplasty. Increased confidence, enhanced self-esteem, and greater comfort are among the many benefits women report following their labiaplasty procedure with Dr. Bonillas. Women are able to enjoy clothes and swimsuits that they feel good wearing. They are also able to enjoy physical activities they once avoided. These enhancements greatly improve their quality of life as they feel better about themselves and are able to perform activities comfortably.

If you are a relatively healthy woman struggling with pain, irritation, embarrassment, or overall distress with regards to your labia, you may be a candidate for labiaplasty. Women looking to undergo this procedure should be nonsmokers who have decided to address their discomfort for personal reasons. You should not consider labiaplasty to appease another person. You should have realistic expectations about what labiaplasty surgery can do for you and your concerns.

Dr. Bonillas wants to ensure you have a safe and successful surgery and recovery. In order to prepare for labiaplasty surgery, you should expect to take at least a week off from work to recover. Dr. Bonillas may direct you to stop smoking and drinking alcohol in the time leading up to and after surgery. You may need to stop taking any medications and supplements that may thin your blood, such as certain anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, and herbal supplements. You may need to remove any hair from the area to allow for appropriate visualization of the surgical site.
If there are any additional directives specific to your case, Dr. Bonillas will discuss them with you during your pre-operative appointment.
On the day of surgery, Dr. Bonillas will meet with you to review your treatment plan. He will address any concerns you may have and make sure you are comfortable with your decision to move forward with the procedure. The appropriate anesthetic will be administered to keep you comfortable throughout the surgery. Dr. Bonillas will mark the incision areas with a surgical marker so he may easily visualize specific areas of focus. Depending on your unique anatomy and needs, Dr. Bonillas may perform your labiaplasty using one of two distinct techniques. In addition, a clitoral hood reduction may be performed in conjunction with a labiaplasty. This is usually performed in women to bring balance to the aesthetics of the outer genitalia or to address other concerns.
In the wedge technique, Dr. Bonillas may excise a triangular-shaped sliver of tissue from the labia. The remaining tissue is then carefully brought together and sutured. This leaves the outer contours of the labia intact for those women wanting a more natural look.
The trim technique focuses on removing the excess tissue of the labia directly from the outer edge. This approach may be preferable to women who may desire to remove darker outer edges of the labia. This technique may also suit women who would like a neater appearance to their labia.
A reduction of the clitoral hood removes excess tissue surrounding the clitoris. The clitoral hood reduction can address issues with hygiene, sexual stimulation, and discomfort. In this procedure, Dr. Bonillas may extend the incision from the labiaplasty, medially, towards the clitoris. The excess tissue is removed and the incisions will be closed, resulting in a smoother, balanced vulva.
Following labiaplasty, you may expect to experience some swelling and soreness at the treatment site. You may return to work about a week after labiaplasty. Also, you may be directed to not use tampons during your next menstrual cycle, refrain from sexual intercourse, and to not submerge the vulva under water for about six weeks.
The results from your labiaplasty may be immediately visible as any excess skin will be removed and the remaining tissue will be sutured taut. After any residual swelling has subsided, your labia minora may be tucked neatly behind the labia majora. You may notice an increase in comfort and confidence, as well as improved hygiene following your labiaplasty. As a result, you may move about your day more freely!

Labiaplasty is not intended to alter the sensation a woman feels. Some patients may report increased sensation after undergoing a clitoral hood reduction, as the excess tissue covering the clitoris is removed, allowing for easier access to this sensitive area. Otherwise, labiaplasty does not affect or hinder your prior level of sensation.
Absolutely! There are as many differences in the labia as there are unique people on the planet. Having variety in your labia compared to other women is normal. Despite the normalcy regarding variety, some women opt to undergo labiaplasty because of discomfort caused by labial hypertrophy, or enlarged/elongated labia. If you are experiencing pain or emotional distress from the excess labial tissue, a labiaplasty may be right for you. Contact Scottsdale Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bonillas today.
